10x Potion, 3x Phoenix Down (you have them from the start) "Opportunity of traveling" Sphere (from the start) Songstress Sphere |
(1) Yuna singing.....or is she? The game starts in what the players of FF X will recognize quickly as the stadium of Luca and a very impressive and colorful CG sequence (1) before you get to controle Paine and Rikku. Well, it's not as if you could actually go anywhere as a fight against ???? and two goons begins. It's an easy battle really, unless you've never played a Final Fantasy game, in which case you can check below for a few tips. The others may want to skip that part.
Boss strategy
????: HP 82 MP 9999
Goon (x2): HP 29 MP 8
The only difficulty in this battle is that it's your first, and that you're still not used to the flow of it, regulated by the ATB bar, so everything may seem a bit too fast and confused at first. Just don't lose time thinking about your next course of action. All you need to do is attack, focusing first on each of the goons, then on ????. Try however to get Rikku to steal a Hi-potion from ????: that could come in handy at this early stage of the game where hi-potions are more difficult to come by. The actions of your ennemies should never be a threat to you. ???? casts supporting spells on her goons, then thunder against you; the guards use physical attacks. They are all pretty weak.
By the time this battle is over, you will probably have realized that:
- ATB is back
- Rikku begins the game as a Thief and Paine as a Warrior. Both characters have the commands attack and item; however Rikku has also the command Steal, and Paine the Power Break ability
- Also, you'll see as soon as you can open the game menu that you start the game with a few items: 10 potions and 3 phoenix down (and a key item, the "Opportunity of Traveling" Sphere, but more about it after completion of mission 1)
You may want to spend some time against those easy targets. You can level up without worrying about healing thanks to the creature. It will allow you to steal notably some Phoenix Down which the goons carry from time to time. And, after a certain number of fights, you'll learn new abilities such as "Pilfer Gils" for Rikku that you can use immediately. It is more profitable to use that ability on goons than on fem-goons. Also, you'll be quite happy to have this ability against the next boss, as there's quite a lot of money to get.
Once you've won, there is a short scene, and you're then given control of Rikku at Harbor no 1. Don't worry about her health, she and Paine are fully healed. Following ????, you are attacked by goons who keep coming at you even if you stay stil: it's the only time in the game such a thing happens (otherwise you'll encounter ennemies at random, and you won't know there's one in the vicinity until the battle actually begins). Just go N until you reach the next screen, Harbor no 2. In this part, goons are joined by fem-goons (they usually attack you in groups of four). From there go on your left. There is a creature which seems to be catching its breath on its hands and knees among the crates that you will surely recognize if you're familiar with the Final Fantasy series. Examine it by pressing the X button and it restores your HP and MP. You can repeat the operation as many times as you want.
Go back to chasing after ???? N up to the next screen, Harbor no 3. There, you will face your toughest opponents so far, Logos and Ormi. Luckily for you, Yuna joins in for the fun. She has the Gunner's ability Trigger Happy, but it isn't very powerfull so far, and your ATB bar becomes longer to refill for your next turn after using it.
Boss strategy
Ormi: HP 97 MP 0
Logos: HP 86 MP 18
Again, this is not very difficult, but keep an eye on your HP, and don't hesitate to use a potion if necessary. You may use Paine's Power Break ability on both, as it also earns you more AP. Get rid of Logos first, as he can heal his companion, then of Ormi, who, on his own, is an easy target. Rikku should take time to steal your first accessories, Silver Glasses from Logos, and an Iron Bangle from Ormi, as well as a few hundred Gils. Make sure you steal every time you encounter a boss, as they are those with the most interesting items, and some good money.
(2) Your first encounter with Leblanc/ Credits: ffx2.com After another cutscene starts a new battle against Leblanc, who has just given you back the songstress dressphere (2).
Leblanc: HP 130 MP 101
Leblanc uses both physical attacks and thunder. Follow the same strategy as above for Rikku - you can steal a Silver Bracer and a lot of Gils - and Paine, who attacks physically. This is at this point that you're introduced to the Dress Up. Press L1 when it's Yuna's turn of action, and select "Songstress". Yuna transforms; you can now cast Darkness by selecting the "Darkness dance" ability. The alteration lasts during the whole time it takes for the songstress' ATB bar to refill.
Your victory also means the end of your 1st mission. Then appears the after-battle screen, with the amount of EXP, Gils and items you won during this mission.
The Celsius

| 100% scenario | Items | Extras |
|---|---|---|
| Talk to everybody in the ship (namely Paine, Rikku, Brother, Buddy and in the Cabin, the barkeeper)
Rest at the cabin (at least once per chapter) Talk to Shinra to watch your Sphere |
4x Potion, 4x Phoenix Down, 1x Ether, 3x Remedy 4 Al Behd Primers "Vanguard" grid |
You are now in the Celsius, your HQ. Several tasks are at hand: first you should go and talk to everybody in turn (3). You'll learn that Brother and Buddy talk usually in Al Behd. For those who played FFX, they already know what's coming ahead: you'll have to get all 26 Al Behd Primers in order to decipher what is said. By talking with Brother and Buddy, you'll already be given 4.
(3) Inside the Clesius/ Credits: ffx2.com Leave the bridge. Outside awaits a save sphere. You are fully healed by simply touching it and you can also save your game. Besides, when on Spira, most save spheres can teleport you back to the Celsius. Continue to the elevator, where you can choose either the deck, the cabin or the engine room. Go to the cabin for now and talk to the barman. You can buy there whatever you need and take some rest. It is important you rest at least once every act to get an extra scene later on if you're aiming the 100% scenari completion. Finally go to the engine room to take all the items in the treasure chests.
You can now go back to the bridge. Talk to Shinra again to learn more about the gameplay. Especially, go through the Garment Grid tutorial: you'll receive the Vanguard grid at the end. Also ask him to watch the sphere you already have. Equip your party with the new grid after allocating all the dresspheres you have, and the accessories you stole, and go talk to Buddy. You are now headed for Mt. Gagazet Ruins.
Mt Gagazet Ruins & Mission 2

| 100% scenario | Items | Extras |

| Arrive at the top within the time limit Complete Mission 2 "Outrun Leblanc and Co" |
4x Potion, 1x Mega Phoenix, 1x Elixir, 3x Remedy Red Ring, White Ring, Yellow Ring, Star Pendant, Muscle Belt Gagazet Sphere |
(4) Mt Gagazet After a cutscene, you're quickly introduced to something new to the Final Fantasy series, the climbing and jumping (by pressing on the O button). Follow Rikku and Paine. Don't forget the tresure chest on your way: instead of jumping, just continue ahead, you'll automatically fall to where the chest is: there is a soon-to-be-very-usefull Yellow Ring that you should equip immediately. You can climb back right behind you, and jump across to join your teammates. Head down the steps, and you'll arrive to a save sphere. Save now and continue. After the short scene, examine the machina pressing X to use the elevator.
No save sphere will be available before the boss fight, so I suggest finishing off quickly any enemy you might encounter at this stage. Go down until you come to a crossroad: first go on your left to get the Elixir in the chest. Come back then and climb until you get to a platform. You will automatically start a cutscene and a new fight against Leblanc, Logos and Ormi. Looks like they won't leave you alone so easily....
Boss strategy
Ormi: HP 130 MP 10
Logos: HP 100 MP 25
Leblanc: HP 120 MP 320
Follow the same strategy as before. The songstress' "Darkness dance" will be of great help, at least until you get rid of Logos and Ormi; Rikku can steal Gauntlets, a White Cap, a Tiara, and again a great deal of Gils. You'll be healed automatically at the end of the battle.
Mission 2: Outrun Leblanc & Co
To succeed here, you'll need to reach the top in less than 6 minutes. The good news is that the timer stops when you fight, which is important since you'll often get into random battles on your way. The bad news is that you must get to the chests on the road during the mission: you won't be able to get back to them once the mission is over. Don't worry though, you do have enough time to get everything, even if at one point, you have to get quite out of your way to get one item.
br /> First, head straight on until you come to a treasure chest that contains a Mega Phoenix. Come back a little and step on the first fallen pillar. But DON'T cross on the second one. Instead, jump down the pillar as soon as possible, go on your left and jump on the catwalk. Follow the path until you come to the entrance of the tower. You'll be forced into a fight against a few fiends, but nothing to worry about. Again, because you can't go back and use the save sphere to heal, I suggest that you don't spend too much turns trying to steal items and Gils, this is usually not worth it.
Now you are in a gallery. Go straight on until it becomes larger. Go to your left, climb and press the button there. Step down and to the same at the other end. You've open a passage to access a chest further ahead. Now continue N, and let yourself fall to retrieve a white ring in a chest. Climb and jump across this time. Continue until you come to a crossroad. Take first on your right. The gallery is quite long, but you'll eventually arrive outside. On your left is a chest with a red ring.
Come back to the crossroad and take now the other way N. Once you arrive outside again, go on your left until you arrive near another fallen pillar. You'll be forced into another fight that you should win as easily as the first. Cross the pillar and, as you're still on it, start climbing on your right. Halfway to the top, you'll see a very narrow catwalk: jump down and walk around to the right to get to a Star Pendent. Go back and continue climbing.
When you arrive just below the save sphere, the timer will disappear. Save your game and continue to climb. Get the Muscle belt in the chest (it will be there only if you've actually finished in less than 6 minutes). Check your equipment before taking the staires ahead of you, as it will lead you to the next boss (5)....
(5) Boooo, a big bad spider!
Credits: ffx2.animesoul.com Boss strategy
Boris: HP 480 MP 0
weak against: fire, ice
I'm sure you had never seen a spider quite that big (except for Shelob in LOTR: Return of the King, but that's another thing entirely). Don't worry though, it may be big, but it's a lot easier to defeat than Leblanc and her team. Equip both the red and the white ring on Rikku and Yuna, as they allow you to cast Fire and Ice magics, against which Boris is vulnerable (don't equip them on Paine, as she can already use her Flametongue ability, or the Ice Brand if she's learned it. Both dealing about the same amount of damage). Speaking of Paine, don't forget to make good use of her Armor Break and Power Break (if you've learned it) abilities to weaken Boris' attacks. His only attack that may be a bit of a problem is his Sticky End attack, which is used every 4th round, and that induces "stop" on one or 2 girls. You can use a Remedy, but I personaly prefer to wait until it wears off. The best is still to beat it before it comes to a fourth round, which is very possible.
You have won, now the sphere is yours! Just enjoy the cut scene, then the end of mission screen will follow. Once you control Yuna again, go outside, and you'll be automatically ported back to the Celsius
Back to the Celsius

(6) Back on the Celsius Credits: Gamezone.com When you get back to the Celsius, your first action should be to go talk to Brother. Comfort him, and then turn to Shinra to have him show you the sphere; you'll receive the Black Mage dressphere (6).
From now on you have complete freedom to go wherever you want. That's right, complete freedom! Those who kept complaining about the linearity of FFX should be ecstatic. Here is how things go: when you talk to Buddy, he'll point out two destinations that are compulsory: Besaid Island and Zanarkand Ruins, suggesting you should go to Besaid Island first. When you'll be done in Zanarkand, you'll be automatically taken to Kilika Island where the first chapter ends. But when you get to Besaid and Zanarkand, and what you do before is completely up to you. You'll find on the sidequests page all the destinations in the order I would suggest to complete all possible scenario requirements for those aiming to get 100%: you have to go everywhere to achieve that, but not in any particular order, and some missions are still available during one or more following chapters. However, consider that:
- The save sphere before the Tresure Room in Zanarkand is your last chance to go back to the Celsius before the end of chapter 1. Make sure you've done everything you wanted by the time you get there
- You must complete the secondary mission in Djose BEFORE going to Bikanel Island
- Luca's and the Moonflow's side quests are not available anymore once you've completed the mission in Zanarkand
- Take me to the Sidequests
- Continue with the main quest
- Back to the Index
